About Edward Norton (1969 - )

Edward Norton was born on August 18, 1969.  His given name at birth was Edward Harrison Norton.  He is sometimes credited as Ed Norton.  Norton was born in Boston, Massachusetts and was raised in Columbia, Maryland.

Edward Norton's father who bears the same name as his son, is an attorney who works for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. His father was also an attorney for President Jimmy Carter.  Robin Norton, his mother, was a former foundation executive and teacher.  She passed away from brain cancer in 1997.  Norton also has two siblings named James and Molly.

In 1987, Edward Norton graduated from Wilde Lake High School in Columbia.  He received a B.A. in history from Yale in 1991.  As an undergraduate, Norton took several Japanese
and theater courses.

Following Norton's graduation, he worked in Osaka, Japan consulting for his grandfather's company, Enterprise Foundation.  The foundation works to get affordable housing for low income families.

Beginning at the age of five, Edward Norton became interested in acting.  He attended theater schools throughout his life.  He eventually began working on stage in New York as a member of the Signature players who produced the plays of playwright and director Edward Albee.

In 1996, Edward Norton won the role for PRIMAL FEAR.  As a result of his screen testings, he was soon offered roles in Woody Allen's EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU and THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT.

In 1998, Norton played the guitar with Courtney Love's band, Hole, in two gigs in Los Angeles.

Also in 1998, Norton competed with Matt Damon in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

For his role in AMERICAN HISTORY X in 1998, Edward Norton gained thirty pounds of muscle and transformed his look into a monstrous skinhead.  This role gained him an Oscar nomination in 1999.

Also in 1999, he was critically acclaimed for his role in FIGHT CLUB.  In 2000, Edward Norton made his directorial debut in KEEPING THE FAITH.

From 1996 to 1998, Norton dated Courtney Love.  From 1999 to 2003 he dated Salma Hayek.

Edward Norton serves as a member of the board of directors at the Enterprise Foundation in New York.

Norton was voted International Man of the Year in 2003 by British GQ magazine.
