Taken
at face value, John Curran's "Stone" seems to be a sweaty, slightly
chatty noir drama that spins in ever tightening, but never very
explosive, circles. But like the retiring Michigan parole officer played
by Robert De Niro, there's much more going on beneath the surface.
De
Niro is Jack Mabrey, a Michigan desk cop who gums up his imminent
retirement by taking on the case of a troublesome inmate (Edward Norton)
who calls himself "Stone." Unsure about his chances for release, Stone
asks his devious wife Lucetta (Milla Jovovich) if she can help his cause
on the outside, so she insinuates herself -- pantingly, provocatively
-- into Mabrey's life, tempting him and picking at his inner crises.
